Martin Keown: How Man United have improved since Louis van Gaal
The Arsenal legend believes Jose Mourinho has made some improvements over the past season at Manchester United
Martin Keown insists Jose Mourinho has improved Manchester United over the past season.
The Red Devils played out a dour goalless draw with Southampton at St Mary’s in the Premier League on Wednesday night.
Manchester United failed to win their last four top-flight games to secure a sixth-place finish in their first campaign under Mourinho.
The outspoken manager signed four players in the 2016 summer transfer window following his appointment as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May 2016.
Manchester United won the EFL Cup at Wembley back in February thanks to a 3-2 victory over Southampton thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s winner.
Mourinho can secure his second trophy in Stockholm next week when Manchester United take on Eredivisie side Ajax in the Europa League final.
Asked whether Mourinho’s first season at Manchester United has been a failure, former Arsenal defender Keown told the Daily Mail:
“No, because if they beat Ajax they will have won two trophies and be in the Champions League for next season.
“There have been improvements upon Louis van Gaal’s tenure. They went 25 games unbeaten and I feel the players are giving everything for their manager.”
Manchester United need to win the Europa League to secure a place in next season’s Champions League competition.
