Martin Keown sends message to Man United fans about Jose Mourinho
The former Arsenal defender doesn't believe Jose Mourinho will prioritise Manchester United's Europa League campaign over Premier League
Martin Keown has played down the chances of Jose Mourinho resting his big-name players for Manchester United’s trip to Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils are facing an injury crisis in their Manchester United squad ahead of the long trip to the English capital to take on the Gunners this weekend.
The 20-time English champions eased to a 1-0 win against Celta Vigo in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final in Spain on Thursday night.
Mourinho lost Marcus Rashford and Ashley Young to injury during the Europa League clash just over 48 hours ahead of Manchester United’s clash against Arsenal.
The Red Devils are in fifth place in the Premier League table and four points behind third-placed Liverpool in the race to secure a top-four finish.
However, Manchester United can qualify for the Champions League if Mourinho’s side win the Europa League this season.
Speaking to the Daily Mail about Mourinho’s claim that Manchester United will field an under-strength team at Arsenal, Keown said: “I would take Jose Mourinho’s words with a large pinch of salt!
“I sympathise with Manchester United for the number of games they have had to play this season and the injuries they have suffered.
“But United, like many teams over the years, are a victim of their own success. Playing Thursday, Sunday, Thursday is not the most arduous of schedules — in 1995, the last time Arsenal finished behind
“Tottenham — we were playing Thursdays and Saturdays towards the end of the season!
“I think there is an element of bravado in what Mourinho is saying. He will want to do well in both the Europa League and the Premier League.”
