Gary Neville sends message to Man United fans about Jose Mourinho’s style
The Manchester United legend insists he prefers the style of football under Jose Mourinho this season
Gary Neville insists he is a fan of Manchester United’s style of football under Jose Mourinho.
The Red Devils boss has been criticised for his tactics in recent weeks after a run of two stalemates and a defeat to leave their top-four hopes in doubt.
Manchester United adopted a negative approach to the Manchester derby as Mourinho’s side settled for a point in a goalless draw at The Etihad.
The 20-time English champions succumbed to a 1-1 draw with Swansea City before Manchester United lost 2-0 to Arsenal in north London in the Premier League.
Manchester United have only scored 51 times in 35 games in the Premier League this season, which is less goals than Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth side.
Speaking to Monday Night Football, Neville defended Mourinho’s tactics and insisted Manchester United’s performances have been better this season.
“I think the style is a lot better than last season, personally, as a Manchester United fan,” Neville said.
“When they went open against Manchester City they got battered and he’s shut up shop in big games from then because he thought they weren’t good enough to take on big teams punch for punch.”
Manchester United appointed Mourinho as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May 2016 following a fifth-place finish last term.
The Red Devils won the EFL Cup at Wembley back in February.
