Juan Mata sends message to Man United fans after Arsenal loss
Juan Mata admits Manchester United's focus is now on winning the Europa League after the loss to Arsenal
Juan Mata admits that Manchester United’s focus is now on reaching the Europa League final after their 2-0 loss to Arsenal on Sunday.
The Spanish playmaker made his return to the starting line-up at The Emirates but was unable to prevent the Red Devils from slipping to a disappointing defeat by the Gunners.
Goals from Granit Xhaka and Danny Welbeck in the second half wrapped up all three points for Arsene Wenger’s men and dealt a blow to Manchester United’s hopes of finishing in the top four.
Jose Mourinho’s men now know that their best hope of qualifying for next season’s Champions League is probably winning the Europa League.
The Red Devils host Celta Vigo in the return leg of their semi-final clash at Old Trafford on Thursday night after their 1-0 win last week.
And Mata says Manchester United are purely focused on enjoying a positive end to the season.
Mata told Manchester United’s website: “Now we play Celta Vigo and we need to focus on that from this moment.
“We need to recover and focus on the second leg because we have the chance to play in a European final. We are fighting for a Champions League spot through the Europa League, but as well through the Premier League and we came here with this aim but unfortunately we couldn’t win.
“We have a really important chance to play Champions League through the Europa League but in the Premier League anything can happen. We will try to win our remaining games and maybe we [will finish] in the top four.”
