Juan Mata sends message to Man United fans about Chelsea experience
The Manchester United midfielder is hoping to win his first European final after experiencing success with Chelsea
Juan Mata is hoping that he will be able to celebrate winning another European final but a first with Manchester United next week.
The Spain international has more experience of winning European trophies than most of his Manchester United team-mates, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Mata won the Champions League title with former club Chelsea at the Allianz Arena in 2012 thanks to a penalty shootout victory over Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
The attacking midfielder won the Europa League trophy 12 months later when Chelsea were 2-1 winners against Portuguese club Benfica in Amsterdam in 2013.
Mata moved to Manchester United in a big-money deal from Chelsea in the 2013 January transfer window, but the midfielder hasn’t won a European trophy at Old Trafford so far.
The 20-time English champions will take on Eredivisie giants Ajax in the Europa League final in Stockholm on Wednesday 24 May.
Writing in his blog about Manchester United’s Europa League final, Mata said:
“I hope we can enjoy something similar [to Chelsea’s title win] after the final in Stockholm.
“The semis against Celta were tough. We suffered until the last minute but, at the end, we made it to the big final.
“However, as I said after the game, I think they should be very proud of what they did.”
Mata has battled to overcome an injury problem to make himself available for the Europa League final next week.
