Jamie Carragher: The difference between Man United star and Marcus Rashford
The Liverpool legend explains what Marcus Rashford brings to the Manchester United team
Jamie Carragher believes Marcus Rashford is adding a different dimension to the Manchester United side.
Jose Mourinho has stuck with Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a centre-forward role throughout most of the 2016-17 season following the 35-year-old’s free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain last summer.
The 35-year-old striker has scored an impressive 28 goals in all competitions for the 20-time English champions in his first season at the Manchester club.
However, Ibrahimovic’s season was cut short last month after the Manchester United striker suffered a season-ending knee injury in a 2-1 win against Anderlecht at Old Trafford.
As a result, Mourinho has reverted to using Rashford as their main striker and the England international has thrived in a central role after spending most of the season on the wing.
The 19-year-old scored the winner against Anderlecht before his stunning free-kick proved the difference in a 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.
Writing in his Daily Mail column about Rashford, Carragher said: “His pace has given United a dimension they have lacked with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, no matter how well the Swede has performed.
“Speed is the one thing defenders hate playing against and Rashford is like a whippet.”
