Owen Hargreaves believes Jose Mourinho trusts Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini.

The Belgium international started in the heart of Mourinho’s midfield on Thursday night as Manchester United eased to a 1-0 win against Celta Vigo in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final.

Fellaini was named in the Manchester United starting line-up despite the midfielder’s ending off in the final minutes of the Manchester derby in the Premier League last month.

The 29-year-old has scored two goals and has made one assist in 44 appearances in all competitions under Mourinho despite being linked with a move out of Manchester United following the manager’s appointment.

Hargreaves, who was part of Manchester United’s Champions League-winning team in 2008, offered some insight into why Fellaini is such a favourite with Mourinho.

“Mourinho trusts Fellaini in these type of games. He gives them a physical presence,” Hargreaves told BT Sport.

Fellaini moved to Manchester United in a £27m transfer from Premier League rivals Everton back in the 2014 summer transfer window.

The Red Devils are in fifth place in the Premier League table.
