Pundit sends transfer warning to Arsenal about Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez
Martin Keown expects Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez to leave Arsenal at the end of the 2016-17 season
Martin Keown says it is unlikely that Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez will stay at Arsenal.
The Gunners are facing a battle to keep their prized assets at the Emirates Stadium following a disappointing 2016-17 Premier League campaign.
Ozil and Sanchez failed to agree contract extensions with the north London club earlier this season to leave their long-term futures in doubt at The Emirates.
Sanchez has been linked with a controversial move to Premier League champions Chelsea in the summer with little over 12 months remaining on his contract.
Ozil, whose current deal will also expire at the end of the 2017-18 season, has previously been touted as a potential target for Manchester United and Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.
Writing in his Daily Mail column about the future of Arsenal’s key men at The Emirates beyond the summer, former defender Keown said:
“When there was talk of Sanchez and Ozil wanting out, it coincided with Arsenal losing seven games in 12 and getting knocked out of the Champions League.
“Sanchez and Ozil downed tools during those games. There is a fear that if Arsenal give them ridiculous sums of money to stay, they could throw their toys out of the pram once more when things go wrong.
“It seems unlikely that they will stay at the club. Regardless of their futures, these two now need to go and win a trophy for Arsenal and be remembered for their successes at the club.”
Arsenal can still end the 2016-17 season with some silverware if the Gunners beat champions Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday 27 May.
