Ian Wright believes Paul Pogba will prove he is a top midfielder once the Manchester United record signing starts to ignore the off-field distractions.

The 23-year-old ended his first season back at Old Trafford on a high note on Wednesday night thanks to Manchester United’s 2-0 win against Ajax in the Europa League final.

Pogba broke the deadlock in Stockholm with a deflected strike to help Manchester United get one hand on the trophy before Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s second-half effort.

Manchester United signed Pogba in a world-record £89m deal from Serie A giants Juventus in the summer transfer window following Jose Mourinho’s appointment.

The France international has been criticised for his subdued performances in a Manchester United shirt, while Pogba’s social media activity has also received scrutiny.

Former Arsenal striker Wright believes Pogba will be a much-improved player once the world-record signing forgets about the off-field distractions.

“Paul Pogba is still one of the best midfielders in the world. He hasn’t proven it too much this season,” Wright told the Sun Goals podcast.

“He hasn’t done it often enough. There has been a lot of off-field stuff. It gives people an opportunity to have a go at him.”

Wright added: “Once he focuses on purely playing, he is going to be magnificent.”
