Phil Thompson: Why Liverpool fans are jealous of Man United
The Liverpool legend admits he is jealous that Manchester United have reached two cup finals this term, winning the EFL Cup
Phil Thompson admits Liverpool fans are jealous of Manchester United winning silverware this season.
The Red Devils are in sixth place in the Premier League table and out of the race to finish in the top four following a 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.
Manchester United won the EFL Cup final back in February thanks to a 3-2 win against Southampton after Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 87th-minute winner at Wembley.
Jose Mourinho’s side can win their second trophy of the 2016-17 campaign when Manchester United take on Eredivisie giants Ajax in the Europa League final in Stockholm next Wednesday.
Manchester United could end the season with three pieces of silverware after a 2-1 win against Leicester City secured the Community Shield back in August.
However, the Red Devils won’t secure a place in next season’s Champions League unless Manchester United win the Europa League trophy.
Liverpool, meanwhile, will finish in the top four and seal a return to Europe’s top table if Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Middlesbrough on the final day of the season.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ about Mourinho’s complaints about Manchester United’s hectic fixture schedule, Thompson said:
“I’ll always be jealous of teams winning. I’m jealous of Chelsea winning the league.
“Liverpool got into the EFL Cup and Europa League final last year. It’s what I expect from my team.”
