Phil Thompson predicts where Arsenal, Man United will finish
The former Liverpool captain doesn't envisage Arsenal nor Manchester United squeezing into the top four
Phil Thompson doesn’t expect Arsenal or Manchester United to sneak into the top-four spots.
The Gunners suffered a 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby to leave Arsene Wenger’s six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City.
Arsenal are now facing the real possibility of missing out on a place in the top four for the first time under their 67-year-old manager.
Manchester United, meanwhile, dropped points in a 1-1 stalemate with relegation-threatened Swansea City at Old Trafford on Sunday after Gylfi Sigurdsson’s free-kick cancelled out Wayne Rooney’s penalty.
The Red Devils are four points adrift of third-placed Liverpool despite having played one game less than Jurgen Klopp’s men in the 2016-17 Premier League season.
Former Liverpool captain Thompson is backing Arsenal and Manchester United to finish in sixth and fifth place.
“Manchester United have got two very difficult away games, while Arsenal’s run-in isn’t quite as difficult,” Thompson told Sky Sports News HQ.
Jose Mourinho was appointed as Manchester United’s new manager following a fifth-placed finish under Louis van Gaal last term.
Arsenal, meanwhile, will finish below their north London rivals for the first time under Wenger.
