Rio Ferdinand insists he would rather win the Europa League than finish in the top four.

Manchester United are facing an uphill battle to finish in the Premier League’s top four following a mixed first season under Jose Mourinho.

The Red Devils lost 2-0 to bitter rivals Arsenal at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon to leave Manchester United five points behind third-placed Liverpool.

Jose Mourinho’s side dropped to sixth place in the table after Arsene Wenger’s side were 2-0 winners against Southampton at St Mary’s on Wednesday night.

Manchester United were 1-0 winners at Celta Vigo last week thanks to Marcus Rashford’s impressive free-kick winner in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.

Speaking ahead of the Red Devils’ second leg of their last-four clash, Ferdinand explained why he would savour winning the Europa League more than a top-four finish.

“If the end of the season comes and Manchester United have won the Europa League and they’re in the Champions League.

“I’d rather be in that camp than the one who finished fourth, because you’ve not got to qualify and you’ve got a medal.

“In that sense, I’d rather be sitting where Manchester United are now. But they’ve still got a job to do. Then it’s the final, and that’s a one-off. We live in hope.”
