Martin Keown makes interesting Man United claim about Zlatan Ibrahimovic
The Arsenal legend believes Zlatan Ibrahimovic looks fitter and younger than Man United captain Wayne Rooney
Martin Keown has claimed that Zlatan Ibrahimovic looks fitter and younger than Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney.
The former Sweden international scored 28 goals in 44 games in all competitions in the 2016-17 season following his free transfer from Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain last summer.
The 35-year-old silenced his critics with a series of commanding performances up front despite his critics suggesting he could struggle to adjust to Premier League football.
Ibrahimovic’s season was cut short in April following his serious knee injury in a 2-1 win against Anderlecht in the Europa League quarter-finals.
Rooney, 31, has struggled to make an impression under Jose Mourinho despite becoming Manchester United’s record goal-scorer earlier this season.
The Manchester United number 10 has scored four goals in 24 appearances in the Premier League but have only made 10 starts in the current campaign.
Former Arsenal defender Keown believes Ibrahimovic has blossomed into Manchester United’s leader up front over the course of the season.
“He is 35 but he looks younger, fitter and stronger than Wayne Rooney. He has been the leader of United’s attack, scoring freely,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“Are they going to allow him to move on when, provided he recovers from injury, he looks as if he has much still to offer?
“I wonder if he would renegotiate based on his recovery, for a lesser salary or a smaller goal bonus that would increase once he is fit.”
Ibrahimovic scored twice in a 3-2 win against Southampton in the EFL Cup final at Wembley in February.
