Paul Merson urges Man United to forget about signing 18-year-old striker, this is why
The Arsenal legend explains why Manchester United should avoid signing Kylian Mbappe and stick with Marcus Rashford in the summer
Paul Merson believes Manchester United should reject the chance to sign Kylian Mbappe and stick with Marcus Rashford up front next season.
The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move to sign the Monaco teenager following the France international’s electric performances in the Champions League in the 2016-17 season.
Manchester United were reported to have made a £69m offer to sign the 18-year-old earlier this term, although the Ligue 1 side rejected the offer for their prized asset.
Jose Mourinho has used Rashford sparingly throughout the current campaign given Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s prolific performances following his free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain last summer.
Rashford has still produced a credible return of 11 goals in 48 games in all competitions despite being limited to appearances from the bench for much of the 2016-17 campaign.
The England star has enjoyed a run in the starting line-up in recent weeks following Ibrahimovic’s injury and the striker scored the winner in recent Europa League games against Anderlecht and Celta Vigo.
Writing in his Daily Star column about the Manchester United striker and their reported summer target Mbappe, Merson said: “Kylian Mbappe is a great player.
“But so is Marcus Rashford – and he deserves a chance to be Manchester United’s main man next season.
“United have been linked with a massive bid for Mbappe at Monaco but for me Rashford could be every bit as good if they just put their faith in him.”
