Martin Keown explains why Man United should sign 24-year-old defender
The Arsenal legend believes Micheal Keane should seize the chance to return to Manchester United this summer
Martin Keown believes Michael Keane should seize the chance to return to Manchester United in the summer.
The Burnley defender’s future has been a source of relentless speculation in the second half of the 2016-17 season after a standout campaign under Sean Dyche.
Keane moved to Burnley in a £2.5m deal from Manchester United in 2015 after Louis van Gaal deemed the centre-half surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
The English defender helped Burnley to win the Championship last term before the centre-half was vital in securing the Clarets’ status as a top-flight team this term.
Manchester United have been heavily linked with a surprise swoop to re-sign Keane at the end of the campaign after the defender earned his first England cap earlier this year.
Keown left Arsenal in 1986 before the English centre-half return to the north London club in 1993 following spells at Aston Villa and Everton.
Writing in his Daily Mail column about Keane’s potential move to Manchester United in the summer transfer window, Keown said:
“I went back to Arsenal after being allowed to leave.
“I felt there was unfinished business and initially I found it very difficult because I was trying too hard.
“Keane will want to fulfil the dream of playing for Manchester United that will have started when he arrived at the club as a kid and first met Sir Alex Ferguson.
“If he does not go back it will always tug at the heartstrings.”
