Rio Ferdinand opens up about Man United summer transfers
Rio Ferdinand discusses the importance of the forthcoming summer transfer window for Manchester United
Rio Ferdinand has warned Manchester United that the Red Devils will have to pay attention to the age of the players they try and bring to the club this summer.
Manchester United are bound to be linked with a host of Europe’s top stars this summer as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his squad ahead of his second season in charge at the club.
In particular, the Red Devils boss Mourinho is likely to be on the lookout for attacking reinforcements.
Wayne Rooney’s future at the club continues to be a source of speculation and Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been ruled out of action for a number of months with a serious knee injury.
Marcus Rashford has been leading the line at Old Trafford in recent games and the 19-year-old has earned plenty of praise for his displays for the Red Devils.
However, Ferdinand has warned that the wrong signings this summer could hamper the teenager’s progression at Old Trafford.
Ferdinand told BT Sport: “It’s really important which age [of player] they go in for [in the summer].
“If you really believe that Marcus Rashford is the future number nine at this football club then getting someone who is 25, 25 years old could stunt his growth so they’ve got to be aware of that.
“But if you look at the history of this club when they’ve been successful, they had three or four top strikers who have rotated.
“It’s down to Mourinho to make that decision.”
