Tony Cottee has claimed that Manchester United could sign Romelu Lukaku this summer – and that Wayne Rooney could head to Everton as part of the deal.

The Red Devils are bound to be linked with a host of players ahead of the summer transfer window as Jose Mourinho prepares for his second season in charge at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have endured a disappointing season in the Premier League and have missed out on a top-four finish, leaving Europa League glory as their only hope of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Lukaku’s future at Everton has been a source of speculation in recent weeks and both Manchester United and Chelsea have been touted as possible destinations for the Belgian forward.

And Cottee reckons that Manchester United could be set to snap up the prolific forward in a deal which would have Rooney move back to his former club.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ on Wednesday morning, Cottee said: “There is a lot of talk about Lukaku going to Manchester United.

“If he does, you could see Rooney going the other way.”
