Rio Ferdinand sends message to Chelsea, Man United about 22-year-old
The Manchester United legend isn't convinced that Tiemoue Bakayoko is ready to move to the Premier League
Rio Ferdinand has warned Chelsea and Manchester United that Tiemoue Bakayoko isn’t ready for a big-money move to the Premier League yet.
The Monaco midfielder has become one of the most-coveted midfield prospects in Europe thanks to combative performances in the Champions League this term.
The 22-year-old midfielder has scored one goal in nine appearances in Europe’s premier club competition this season, helping AS Monaco to reach the last four.
Bakayoko has also netted two goals in AS Monaco’s charge for the Ligue 1 title as he continues to be ever-present in the starting line-up for the French leaders.
Chelsea have been linked with a move to sign the France international as Antonio Conte looks to partner the Monaco star with PFA player of the year N’Golo Kante for next season.
Manchester United, who are Europa League semi-finalists, are another Premier League club touted with an interest in Bakayoko ahead of a big summer transfer window for AS Monaco.
Manchester United legend Ferdinand raised his concerns, though, after Bakayoko struggled in Monaco’s 2-0 loss to Juventus in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.
“I think Bakayoko today, we found a bit more about him,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“He’s had a lot of hype, he’s had a lot of news articles about him coming to the Premier League to all the top teams.
“I don’t know if he is ready to make that big step yet.
“There were deficiencies in his game in terms of picking people up and identifying danger.”
