Pundit makes confident transfer prediction about Man United star
Matt Le Tissier doesn't expect Wayne Rooney to stay at Manchester United beyond the summer
Matt Le Tissier admits he would be surprised if Wayne Rooney is still at Manchester United next season.
The England international has struggled to tie down a regular starting spot in Jose Mourinho’s team this season following the manager’s appointment back in May 2016.
Rooney became Manchester United’s record goal-scorer when the 31-year-old centre-forward scored a late equaliser at Stoke City during the festive period.
The former Everton striker has scored four goals and has made five assists in 22 appearances in the Premier League this season.
The 31-year-old has been linked with a lucrative move to China or Major League Soccer at the end of the 2016-17 campaign.
Former Southampton captain Le Tissier tipped Rooney to leave Manchester United with Mourinho unable to guarantee regular first-team football.
“I’d be surprised [if Rooney stayed]. I really would. He is only 31. He isn’t a regular starter,” Le Tissier told Sky Sports.
“For somebody like him, he’d want to be somewhere where he is starting week in week out.
“He is the type of player who needs that.”
Manchester United won the EFL Cup at Wembley earlier this season thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s goals either side of half-time.
The Red Devils will take on Eredivisie giants Ajax in the Europa League final at Stockholm on Wednesday 24 May.
