Arsene Wenger sends message to Tottenham fans
Arsene Wenger congratulates Tottenham on finishing above Arsenal for the first time in 22 years
Arsene Wenger has congratulated Tottenham on finishing above Arsenal in the table for the first time in 22 years.
Wenger watched his side be thoroughly outplayed at White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon as Spurs triumphed 2-0 thanks to goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane.
The result guaranteed that Spurs would end up above their local rivals and also kept them in the hunt for the Premier League title.
Arsenal, meanwhile, face an uphill struggle to secure a top-four finish and Champions League qualification this season.
And Wenger has delivered his verdict on Tottenham’s recent success.
Speaking at his post-match news conference on Sunday, Wenger said: “Well done to them, but when you start the championship the target is not to finish above Spurs, it is to fight for the title.
“In 20 years it happened once. Mathematically it has to happen once. We are not happy with it but we don’t compare ourselves to Spurs, we compare ourselves to where we want to be.”
Arsenal must now dust themselves down as they prepare for their Premier League showdown with Manchester United at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon.
The north London side are currently in sixth place in the Premier League table as they bid to secure their spot in the Champions League for next season.
