Paul Merson says he wouldn’t be surprised to see Arsenal capitalise on a Liverpool “slip-up” and secure a top-four finish on Sunday.

Liverpool head into the final game of the season with their fate in their own hands and knowing that victory over Middlesbrough in front of their home fans at Anfield will secure a top-four finish and a spot in next season’s Champions League.

Arsenal, who are fifth in the table, take on Everton at The Emirates hoping for a slip-up from either Liverpool or Manchester City in the final day’s games.

The Gunners are clearly the outsiders to finish in the top four this season but Merson says he can envisage seeing the Gunners overtaking Liverpool on the final day.

Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson said: “It should be all over for Arsenal but I wouldn’t be surprised if Liverpool slip up tomorrow and let them back in the Champions League through the back door.

“Jurgen Klopp’s side should have put this to bed weeks ago. They should already have qualified.

“But we’ve all seen in these games their record against the lower teams is atrocious.

“Bournemouth, West Ham and Southampton have all gone to Anfield this season and got results, and it only takes one good performance from Boro.”

He added: Arsenal still have to beat Everton to have a chance but I think they will. Everton’s away form hasn’t been the best lately and they have nothing to play for.”

Arsenal, who finished second last term, are aiming to end the season with a trophy and will take on Chelsea in the FA Cup final at the end of the month.
