Pundit compares Liverpool star to Cesc Fabregas
Phil Thompson believes Philippe Coutinho could star in a similar role to Cesc Fabregas at Liverpool
Phil Thompson has compared Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho to Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas.
Fabregas has earned a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most talented playmakers over the years and his solid form for Chelsea this season has helped the Blues win the title.
Coutinho, meanwhile, has been in brilliant form for Liverpool and his sparkling display helped the Reds beat West Ham 4-0 at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon to keep their top-four bid on track.
The Brazilian playmaker was deployed in a deeper role by Jurgen Klopp against West Ham and the move paid dividends following his brilliant display.
And Thompson believes that Coutinho can play a similar role to Fabregas for Liverpool moving forwards.
Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Monday morning, Thompson said: It will always divide opinion with Liverpool fans.
“A lot of time looking at this match you were thinking he was too deep.
“In midweek Jurgen Klopp actually said I think Philippe can be a No.8, play in a little bit of a deeper role to open up from.
“Maybe a little bit like Fabregas at Chelsea, to see a pass.
“His pass for Sturridge was exquisite.
“All of a sudden it opens up and the pass has the right pace on it. He’s a genius the way he plays his football.”
Coutinho will be expecting to start for Liverpool when the Reds take on Middlesbrough in their final game of the season at Anfield on Sunday.
Victory in that game would secure Liverpool’s place in the top four.
