Arsene Wenger sends Arsenal warning to Liverpool about top four
Arsene Wenger discusses Arsenal's hopes of catching Liverpool in the race for Champions League qualification
Arsene Wenger has warned Liverpool that Arsenal will do everything they can to make sure they try and pip them to a top-four finish this weekend.
Wenger watched his Arsenal side move to within one point of the Reds on Tuesday night thanks to a 2-0 win over Sunderland at The Emirates.
Liverpool are in the driving seat in the race for Champions League qualification and will take on Middlesbrough at home on Sunday knowing that victory will secure them a top-four finish.
Arsenal, meanwhile, must beat Everton and hope that the Reds slip up at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
The Gunners have regularly finished in the top four since Wenger’s appointment at Arsenal back in 1996 and the Frenchman is determined to try and help his team qualify again this weekend.
Wenger told his post-match news conference on Tuesday night: “I answered for 20 years the question – ‘the top four is nothing special’. So I don’t know why suddenly it could become such a big problem.
“I’m quite surprised. I want to absolutely make sure that we are in there but after that let’s get to 75 points and see what happens.
“You want all the teams to fight like Sunderland did tonight. After, you have to accept the result. What is for sure, if we win our game, we can only be far from one point. Let’s give ourselves every chance.
“I don’t even think about percentage, I just think about let’s make sure we win the game, because we play against Everton.
“Even if you only had one per cent, you would have to play at totally 100 per cent. I think we have a chance. It would be the first time you make 75 points and aren’t in the top four.”
Arsenal will still look to end the season with a trophy when they take on Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley at the end of the month.
