Paul Merson predicts Liverpool v Middlesbrough
Paul Merson says it could be a very nervy afternoon for Liverpool when they take on Middlesbrough
Paul Merson reckons it could be a very nervy afternoon for Liverpool when they host Middlesbrough at Anfield on Sunday.
The Reds are preparing to welcome the already-relegated Boro to Anfield as they look to claim the three points they need to guarantee a place in next season’s Champions League.
Liverpool have their fate in their own hands and know that victory on Sunday will secure a top-four finish and their spot in the Champions League.
Arsenal are hoping that Liverpool slip up and the Gunners would be able to move above the Reds if they beat Everton and Jurgen Klopp’s men drop points.
And Merson feels that stage is set for a thrilling afternoon at Anfield – although he admits it could be ‘game over’ if the Reds score an early goal.
Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson said: “Yes, they’re already down but if you’re a Boro player, surely you’re looking forward to this game. No fear. No pressure. Just a chance to go out with a bang.
“The same thing happened for Sunderland when they won at Hull. Liverpool fans will be nervous and the players might get edgy. If they score early they might go on to win three or four.
“But the longer they go without scoring, the more the nerves creep in. The first 20 minutes of that game are massive.”
Liverpool finished eighth and without a trophy last season.
