Paul Merson states his prediction for Liverpool v Middlesbrough
The Arsenal legend is backing Liverpool to beat Middlesbrough in their final Premier League game of the 2016-17 season
Paul Merson is backing Liverpool to beat Middlesbrough and seal their return to the Champions League on Sunday afternoon.
The Merseyside outfit need three points to be assured of their place in the Europe’s premier club competition next season.
Liverpool are a point ahead of Arsenal who will host Everton at the Emirates Stadium in their final game of the 2016-17 campaign.
The Reds haven’t won their last three Premier League at Anfield following stalemates with Bournemouth and Southampton plus a 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace.
Liverpool have impressed on the road, though, with victories over Stoke City, Watford, West Brom and West Ham in recent months.
Speaking to Sky Sports about Liverpool’s home clash against Middlesbrough with a top-four finish on the line, former Arsenal midfielder Merson said:
“I do expect Liverpool to win. Their form hasn’t been great against the lesser teams, but they have to win. Surely they can’t throw it away from here?
“On the first day of the season, if someone had said to them ‘you’re playing a team who is relegated, they can’t win a game for toffee and you’ve got to beat them at home to make it into the Champions League’, you would take that all day long.”
Liverpool are in fourth place in the Premier League table and two points adrift of third-placed Manchester City.
The Reds haven’t won a Premier League title despite finishing in second place in 2009 and 2014.
