Mark Lawrenson states his prediction for Liverpool v Southampton
Mark Lawrenson looks ahead to Liverpool's clash with Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon
Mark Lawrenson is backing Liverpool to take a step closer towards Champions League qualification by beating Southampton 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
The Reds head into the game fresh from their 1-0 win over Watford on Monday night as Jurgen Klopp chases a top-four finish in his first full season in charge at Anfield.
Liverpool are currently third in the Premier League table as they look to secure Champions League qualification for next season.
And former Reds star Lawrenson is backing Liverpool to claim the three points when they host the Saints at Anfield this weekend.
Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Lawrenson said: “Liverpool got a good win at Watford last time out which means they have taken nine points from their past four games.
“Yes, they will feel they should have beaten Crystal Palace at Anfield too, but that is still a decent haul and makes losing to the Eagles easier to swallow.
“The Reds owe the Saints after they lost to them in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup, and I think they will get some revenge.”
Liverpool finished eighth and without a trophy last season despite having reached the EFL Cup and Europa League finals under Klopp.
The Reds, who have never won the Premier League title, will take on West Ham United and Middlesbrough in their other two remaining games in the Premier League this season.
