Paul Merson states his prediction for Liverpool v Southampton
The Arsenal legend is backing Liverpool to win comfortably against Southampton on Sunday afternoon
Paul Merson says he expects Liverpool to win easily against Southampton in their Premier League clash at Anfield on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s side lost 2-1 to Crystal Palace in their last Premier League game on Merseyside to leave their top-four chances in doubt despite impressive victories on the road at Stoke City and West Brom.
However, Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United failed to secure Premier League victories last weekend to give Liverpool the chance to put their top-four fate back in their own hands.
And Emre Can’s wonder goal sealed a 1-0 win against Watford at Vicarage Road to help Liverpool move four points clear of fifth-placed Manchester United with three games to go.
Writing in his Sky Sports column about Liverpool’s home clash with EFL Cup runners-up Southampton, Merson backed Klopp’s men to ease to a 3-0 win at Anfield.
“The race for the top four is back in Liverpool’s hands and that’s all you can ask for at this stage of the season. I expect them to win this game easily,” Merson said.
“Southampton are another team that are on holiday so I’m expecting a comfortable afternoon for Jurgen Klopp’s side.”
Liverpool haven’t beaten Southampton in three attempts in the EFL Cup and the Premier League in the 2016-17 season.
