Jose Mourinho sends ‘phenomenal’ message to Man United fans about Eric Bailly
The Manchester United manager insisted Eric Bailly was phenomenal despite his sending off in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final
Jose Mourinho hailed Eric Bailly’s phenomenal performance in Thursday night’s 1-1 draw with Celta Vigo despite the defender’s sending off.
The Ivory Coast international has been vital in plugging a makeshift Manchester United defence in recent weeks given the club’s injury problems at the back.
Bailly was rested for Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat at Arsenal on Sunday afternoon after the Ivorian defender helped the Red Devils were 1-0 winners at Celta Vigo in the first leg of their semi-final last week.
However, the summer signing was ruled out of the Europa League final after the centre-half clashed with Facundo Roncaglia in the final minutes of the Europa League last-four clash at Old Trafford.
Roncaglia cancelled out Marouane Fellaini’s 17th-minute header to leave the second leg in the balance with five minutes to go before a flashpoint resulted in two red cards.
Bailly was dismissed for an incident with John Guidetti before Roncaglia came to his team-mate’s aide with a show of aggression against the Manchester United defender.
Speaking about Bailly’s red card to BT Sport, Mourinho said: “I didn’t see the red card incident but Eric Bailly was phenomenal.
“The game was emotional for everyone. Some kept control better than others.
“Facundo Roncaglia is not new in these situations, Bailly was probably naive.
“We now lose a very important player for the final, and we don’t have many.”
