Rio Ferdinand reacts to Marouane Fellaini’s display in Man United’s 1-1 draw with Celta Vigo
Rio Ferdinand was impressed by Marouane Fellaini's display as Manchester United reached the Europa League final with a 1-1 draw with Celta Vigo
Rio Ferdinand praised Marouane Fellaini for his contribution after the Belgian fired Manchester United into the Europa League final after a nervy 1-1 draw with Celta Vigo on Thursday night.
Fellaini headed home Marcus Rashford’s brilliant cross in the 17th minute to put Jose Mourinho’s men 2-0 up on aggregate in the semi-final clash.
However, Celta Vigo set up a tense finale when Facundo Roncaglia scored in the 85th minute.
Goal-scorer Roncaglia and Manchester United defender Eric Bailly were then both sent off late on for a needless physical confrontation, ruling the Ivorian out of the final.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand was very impressed by what he saw from Fellaini and also praised Rashford for his role in setting up the winner.
Speaking during BT Sport‘s coverage of the game, Ferdinand said: “It’s a tremendous ball. Rashford looked like the person who’d unlock the door.
“It’s a great ball and usually he’d be the person on the end of this but he puts the ball in. That’s where I prefer to see Fellaini, in the opposition box causing havoc.”
Manchester United will take on Ajax in the Europa League final in Stockholm in 13 days’ time.
The Red Devils now turn their attentions back to Premier League affairs and their crunch clash against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon.
