Martin Keown: This is what must happen at Arsenal in the summer
The Arsenal legend wants Arsene Wenger to address his future as soon as possible ahead of the summer transfer window
Martin Keown has urged Arsenal to resolve their leadership issue in the summer.
Arsene Wenger is facing an uncertain future at the north London club with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.
The Gunners boss has refused to shed light on whether he will extend his Arsenal reign despite the north London club reportedly offering their manager a new two-year deal.
Arsenal have endured an alarming slump in form in the second half of the season to heap further pressure on the 67-year-old head coach.
The Gunners lost 10-2 on aggregate to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16, including a 5-1 loss at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal suffered resounding losses to their closest rivals Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur to leave their title bid in tatters.
Indeed, Wenger’s side are facing the real prospect of missing out on a top-four finish in the current campaign.
Writing in his Daily Mail column about what needs to happen at the end of the season, Keown said:
“The very first thing they need to do is work out who is in charge — and as soon as possible.
“Arsene Wenger is an outstanding manager but his standout quality has been wiped away.
“He creates a feelgood factor around the club and maps out the future for each player.
“With Wenger’s own future unsure, that creates uncertainty among the players and it is no coincidence that Arsenal’s Premier League form has suffered.”
