Mauricio Pochettino sends message to Chelsea fans about Antonio Conte
The Spurs manager suggests that Chelsea bought the Premier League title in Antonio Conte's first season
Mauricio Pochettino has appeared to suggest that Antonio Conte bought his first Premier League title with Chelsea.
The Blues won the top-flight crown on Friday night thanks to a 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.
£30m striker Michy Batshuayi scored the vital goal to secure the three points necessary to crown Chelsea as champions.
Conte took over the reins from interim manager Guus Hiddink at the end of the 2015-16 season.
The Chelsea boss signed five players in the summer transfer window as the west London side spent £120m on new signings last summer.
Marcos Alonso, N’Golo Kante and David Luiz have all played vital roles in Chelsea’s title success under Conte.
Speaking at his pre-match media conference about Chelsea’s success under Conte this season, Spurs boss Pochettino highlighted the Italian’s spending last summer.
“I understand him. It’s difficult for him because he was always a manager who liked to work with and to develop young talent,” Pochettino said.
“It’s difficult when you sign for a club like Chelsea and you have the pressure to win and you spend the money that they spent on David Luiz, Marcos Alonso, [Michy] Batshuayi and [N’Golo] Kante. I totally understand but I don’t know if I agree with him that it’s an advantage.”
Tottenham lost 1-0 to West Ham United last week to give Chelsea the chance to wrap up the title with two games to spare.
