Michael Owen states his prediction for Southampton v Man United
Michael Owen looks ahead to Manchester United's clash with Southampton in the Premier League on Wednesday night
Michael Owen is expecting a low-scoring game between Manchester United and Southampton in their penultimate Premier League game of the season on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils have lost their last two Premier League games against Arsenal and Tottenham to end their hopes of finishing in the top four this season.
Manchester United’s only hope of qualifying for next season’s Champions League is beating Ajax in the Europa League final in Stockholm next week.
Mourinho is likely to be preparing his team for that crunch game against Ajax as the Red Devils look to secure their spot in Europe’s elite club competition.
And former Liverpool striker Owen is tipping Wednesday’s game to be a low-scoring affair at St Mary’s.
Writing in his column for BetVictor, Owen said: “You have to go back to August 2003 for the last time the Saints beat United on home soil in the Premier League but they won’t have many better chances, with United coming into the game on the back of successive away defeats albeit at Arsenal and Spurs.
“The League Cup final between the sides earlier in the season was a cracker, but I don’t expect to see too many fireworks at St Mary’s with the Saints without a home goal for 275 minutes.”
Manchester United have won the EFL Cup already this season as they look to make it a double trophy haul in Mourinho’s first campaign in charge at Old Trafford.
