Paul Merson states his prediction for Southampton v Man United
The former Arsenal legend is backing Manchester United to edge to a 2-1 win against Southampton
Paul Merson is confident Manchester United will beat Southampton at St Mary’s in the Premier League on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils will be looking to build some momentum following a disappointing run of results in the Premier League ahead of their Europa League final against Ajax in Stockholm on Wednesday 24 May.
Manchester United lost 2-0 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium earlier this month before the Red Devils went down 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur in the last-ever Premier League game at White Hart Lane.
In fact, the Red Devils haven’t won a Premier League game since a 2-0 win at Burnley on Saturday 24 April to end their participation in the top-four race with Jose Mourinho’s men in sixth place.
Writing in his Sky Sports column about Manchester United’s trip to Southampton on Wednesday night, former Arsenal midfielder tipped Mourinho to field the starting XI that he will use for the Europa League final and backed the Red Devils to beat Southampton.
“I think his Europa League team will beat Southampton. Claude Puel is under a bit of pressure,” Merson said.
“They finished seventh last year, but what would you rather: finish seventh and not look like doing anything, or finish 12th and get into a cup final which they should have won?
“Football is all about moments, I’d rather be in the cup final. I think he deserves another chance.”
