We’ve all had those days where it feels harder to stay focused a motivated in the gym. You’re physically present but somehow it just feels as if you’re going through the motions.
It happens to everyone, but it doesn’t need to be a regular problem.
We all remember those amazing workouts – those sessions you never want to end. Everything is on point and you feel you could go harder and for longer.
Choosing a good pre workout supplement can help make that kind of incredible workout a regular thing – they can give you the ‘kick’ you need.
The problem is, many of the pre workout supplements on the market these days are packed full of stimulants and have been known to trigger draining energy crashes.
So we set out on a mission to find the best pre workouts on sale today, based on their ingredients and customer feedback.
In case you’ve never heard about pre workout supplements, they are simply products you consume before training, which have been designed to give you an energy boost and keep you focused.
In short, a good pre workout will make sure that you get the very most out of your session every time – even on those ‘off-days’ we all experience from time to time.
A good pre workout supplement will:
Increase energy – Feel more motivated than ever to enter the gym and work hard.
Enhance your focus – Build a stronger mind-muscle-connection to improve your efficiency during reps.
Boost muscle pumps – Make it easier to push out those extra sets towards the end of your session.
Help you reach your goals more quickly – Enhance everything you do in the gym, helping you to make faster progress.
As we mentioned earlier, not all pre workouts are created equally.
It’s 2017, and we feel there shouldn’t be any need for health and fitness products to contain needless artificial sweeteners or colourings.
You should also check to make sure that your chosen pre workout doesn’t contain high doses of stimulants, as we’ve already mentioned that these can lead to nasty energy crashes.
Generally, the best pre workout supplements combine a good blend of the latest research-backed natural ingredients to give your body the fuel it needs to power through intense workouts.
Coconut Water – Whether it be oil, butter or water, Coconut products have never been more popular than they are today. Packed full of electrolytes, Coconut Water can help to make sure you stay hydrated during your session.
Caffeine – In a supplement, Caffeine has been shown to boost strength and endurance. It can also play a role in improved cognition (memory, focus, reaction time) during your workout.
L-Theanine – You’ve probably already heard about this ingredient, as it seems to have become incredibly popular in recent years. It’s a relaxing agent found in Green Tea leaves and can help to get the most out of Caffeine.
Citrulline Malate – You may not have heard about this one but it’s certainly an ingredient to look for. It is extracted from watermelon and is thought to raise nitric oxide levels, leading to your blood vessels dilating. What does that mean? More intense muscle pumps in the gym.
Creatine Monohydrate – A popular post-workout supplement, Creatine Monohydrate can fuel your muscles while you train as well. It has been shown to boost strength and endurance to make sure you feel on point throughout your session.
All pre workout supplements should come with directions for use specific to the product, so be sure to check the packaging for instructions.
Most products recommend that you consume them around 20-30 minutes before starting your workout to allow time for it to ‘kick in’ fully.
That being said, everyone is different, so it’s worth experimenting to see what timeframe gives you the best results.
For example, someone who usually trains on an empty stomach would probably feel the benefits more quickly.
We’ve taken you through some of the things to look for in a pre workout supplement and have also explained the benefits of taking one on a regular basis before hitting the gym.
So, without further ado, let’s take a look at the best products we found on sale today. We’ve compiled this list based on the ingredients of each product and the customer feedback available online.
We’ve paid particular attention to picking products with as few artificial sweeteners and colourings as possible.
This is a new product but goes straight to the top of our list simply because it ticks all the boxes when it comes to the best ingredients and is also very well reviewed.
4 Gauge was launched earlier this year by specialist supplements company Roar Ambition, meaning it has some of the latest and greatest ingredients.
We’re long-term fans of Roar Ambition’s Instant Knockout fat burner, so let’s take a closer look at their latest offering.
Being a new product, 4 Gauge contains some of the very best proven ingredients when it comes to selecting a good pre workout.
It contains good doses of L-Theanine, Citrulline Malate, Creatine Monohydrate, Caffeine and Acetyl L-Carnitine, among others.
The thing we really like about this product is that the Caffeine content is kept low at just 150mg – that’s much less than a lot of other pre workouts and means you’re less likely to suffer from an energy crash.
4 Gauge is currently only available in a ‘fruit blast’ flavour – but it tasted great (sweet, and slightly sour) and dissolved in water almost instantly.
You can currently only buy it on the official website, meaning you won’t find on sites like Amazon or eBay right now. The box says to take it 20-30 minutes before your workout but we found that it took more like 40 minutes to kick in.
It’s also a premium-priced product and so may not suit everyone’s budget. They do offer multi-box discounts with free shipping on the website, however.
This product our top pick because it contains the best natural pre workout ingredients and is not overloaded with stimulants.
It mixes really well and tastes great – we genuinely looked forward to taking it before heading to the gym.

The next product on our list is Protein World’s pre workout offering – The Slender pre workout blend.
The British company has established itself as one of the major players in the health and fitness industry in recent years. We’re fans of their clean and clear branding and good quality products.
We like that this product contains Citrulline Malate and Caffeine to boost your endurance and energy levels during your workout. It also contains L-Tyrosine, an amino acid which can help to produce noradrenaline and dopamine to in turn reduce stress levels.
It’s currently only available in a ‘Summer Fruits’ flavour but it mixed well with water and tasted pretty good.
It’s only available online and contains the artificial sweetener Sucralose.
It’s also not the cheapest pre workout product on sale these days.
This is a good product from Protein World and is generally very well reviewed online. If you’re looking for a decent-tasting pre workout supplement and don’t mind the fact that it contains the artificial sweetener Sucralose, this could be the one for you.

Third on our list is Bulk Powders’ Complete Pre-Workout product.
If you’re a regular reader of our fitness product reviews, you’ll know that we’re big fans of Bulk Powders’ affordable products. We’ve found them to generally be good quality, even if they are on the more affordable side.
This product contains good doses of Branched Chain Amino Acids and the website says it helps to increase high-intensity physical performance to give you the boost you need in your workouts. What stands out about this product is that, it is Caffeine-free, unlike most of the other pre workouts on sale today.
It also contains a dose of Citrulline Malate (one of our top pre workout ingredients) to help you achieve maximum performance.
This product is currently available in Watermelon and Lemon & Lime flavours.
It contains the artificial sweetener Sucralose and doesn’t mix quite as well as the two products above.
It’s cheaper than the other products and we can’t help but feel that means compromise on the quality of ingredients.
If you’re looking for a Caffeine-free pre workout then this could be the supplement for you. It has good reviews and is made by a reputable UK-based company, but its ingredients are not quite as premium quality as others on this list.

Next up is MyProtein’s Mypre.
The official website boasts that it has been designed specifically for anyone looking for an intense boost of energy during their workouts.
It contains Caffeine and Creatine to help boost your performance during training and is also packed with a good serving of BCAAs to help with muscle repair and prevent further muscle breakdown.
We like the fact that Mypre is available in a selection of seven different flavours, including Sour Apple, Lemon and Lime, Watermelon, Raspberry Lemonade, Orange, Grape and Blue Raspberry.
It contains the artificial sweetener Sucralose and is only available in a 500g tub right now.
This is another decent product. It’s great to have such a wide choice of flavours and MyProtein is a reputable brand from the UK.

The fifth and final product on our list is Adapt Nutrition’s Pre Train.
The website says that it’s been specifically designed to give you the “edge” during your sessions at the gym and help you push yourself to the maximum.
Pre Train contains a selection some of the best ingredients for a pre workout supplement, including the likes of Caffeine, Beta Alanine, Citrulline Malate, Vitamin B6 and Arginine.
It’s currently available in both a Blue Raspberry and Apple flavour and mixes very well with water.
We like this product a lot but once again it contains the artificial sweetener Sucralose.

So there you have it, our pick of the best pre workout supplements on sale at the moment in the UK.
We’ve picked 4 Gauge as our favourite product available at the moment, but you won’t go far wrong by picking any of the powders on this list.
If you’ve never tried a pre workout before, we definitely recommend giving one a go. The main benefit we found from taking one regularly was that we were able to enjoy more consistent workouts in the gym.
Remember, don’t expect a pre workout to do all of the hard work for you. You’ll still have to push yourself, train hard and eat well to see the real results you’re looking for.
But picking a good pre workout can help give you the ‘kick’ you need to make sure that you’re always getting the very best out of your workouts.
