John Barnes wants Liverpool to make this signing to help Simon Mignolet
Liverpool legend John Barnes wants to see the Reds complete a deal to sign a top centre-half this summer...
John Barnes has told Jurgen Klopp that signing a commanding centre-half would help Liverpool number one Simon Mignolet.
The Reds have been heavily linked with a move to sign a defender since the end of the 2016-17 Premier League season.
Indeed, Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool ahead of interest from Chelsea and Manchester City.
However, the Merseyside outfit embarrassingly pulled out of the race to sign Van Dijk and sent an apology to Southampton for their pursuit of the Dutch defender.
Burnley centre-half Micheal Keane has also been linked with a move to Liverpool, although Manchester United are favourites to re-sign the England international.
Speaking to Ladbrokes about what signings Liverpool need in the summer transfer window, former Reds captain Barnes suggested a new centre-half would help Mignolet.
“I think Simon Mignolet did very well in the second half of the year, and a commanding centre-back would be an asset for him,” Barnes said.
“But Liverpool this summer should be looking for quality and depth in all areas.”
Mignolet re-established himself as Liverpool’s number one after temporarily falling behind Loris Karius in the pecking order following the German goalkeeper’s transfer to Anfield last summer.
