The Reds signed the Cameroon defender in a free transfer from Bundesliga side Schalke 04 in the 2016 summer transfer window.
Matip struggled with injuries throughout his first season in the Premier League to limit the African star to 27 starts in the English top flight.
The 25-year-old impressed when fit alongside Liverpool centre-half Dejan Lovren as the Reds secured a top-four finish and a return to the Champions League.
Former Liverpool defender Agger is expecting even greater things from Matip in the 2017-18 campaign.
“I think he did well. The first season is always tough, not only for defenders but any Premier League player,” Agger told Liverpool’s website.
“Playing your first season in the Premier League, you always have to adapt; some do it quicker than others.
“I think he has done pretty well. He’ll learn from this season, I’m sure about that. He can use that next season.
“To play for Liverpool you need to be consistent and that’s something you can see after a few seasons.
“His first season has definitely been good and I think he can be happy with that.”
Matip scored one goal in 33 appearances in all competitions in the 2016-17 campaign under Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool have completed one signing in the summer transfer window so far after England Under-20 international Domimic Solanke completed a move from Chelsea.
The Reds will be hoping to challenge for the Premier League title next term under Klopp after finishing in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
