Man United urged to sign Alvaro Morata ahead of Romelu Lukaku
Manchester United have been told to sign Alvaro Morata ahead of Romelu Lukaku by former coach Rene Meulensteen
Manchester United should sign Alvaro Morata ahead of Romelu Lukaku in the summer transfer window, according to Rene Meulensteen.
The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move to sign a top centre-forward ahead of their return to the Champions League next term.
Manchester United confirmed that Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been released despite scoring 28 goals in all competitions during his one season at Old Trafford.
Captain Wayne Rooney has been heavily linked with an exit this summer after struggling to make an impact under Jose Mourinho in his first season.
Lukaku scored 25 times in 36 games in the Premier League last term to finish as the division’s second-highest goal-scorer behind Tottenham striker Harry Kane.
The Spain international, meanwhile, managed 15 goals in 26 games in La Liga last term but struggled to secure a regular first-team spot.
Speaking to 888sport about Manchester United’s pursuit of a striker this summer, the club’s former assistant manager Meulensteen said:
“Obviously Lukaku knows the Premier League and has played in the Premier League for many years.
“He has plenty of power but I’m not too sure he has the kind of DNA that we’d like to see at Manchester United.
“Morata is a good striker but he’s in a situation where he’s in the wrong place at the wrong time. I like him though: he is mobile, agile, and creates chances.
“The same can be said of Belotti but both would be coming from abroad and would have to adapt to the Premier League which we all know is difficult.
“If Belotti comes in it’s important that he scores early and get the monkey off his back. Then he could be a good fit.
“For me though it would be Morata. We haven’t seen enough of him lately but then again it is extremely hard to get into that Real team.”
Manchester United reached an agreement with Sweden defender Victor Lindelof from Benfica at the weekend.
