Manchester United are interested in signing Benfica right-back Nelson Semedo, according to reports in Portugal.

O Jogo, as quoted by Sport Witness, is reporting that Manchester United have taken the decision to advance their interest in the 23-year-old defender.

La Liga giants Barcelona are thought to be interested in signing the Benfica star but Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin remains their first-choice option this summer.

The same article states that Manchester United are unwilling to go above €35m (£31) in spite of Benfica’s price tag of €40m (£35m) in the transfer window.

Jose Mourinho could view his compatriot as a potential long-term replacement for veteran Ecuador international Antonio Valencia.

Manchester United have already conducted business with Portuguese champions Benfica this summer.

Sweden international Victor Lindelof became the first summer signing last week when Manchester United agreed a £30.7m deal with Benfica.

Manchester United secured a return to the Champions League last season thanks to a 2-0 win against Dutch giants Ajax in the Europa League final last month.

The Red Devils also won the Community Shield and the EFL Cup in their first season under Mourinho’s management.
