New Man United signing told he will need these two qualities to succeed
Rene Meulensteen sends advice to new Manchester United signing Victor Lindelof about succeeding at Old Trafford
Victor Lindelof will need to be able to deal with danger and play out of defence to succeed at Manchester United, according to Rene Meulensteen.
Manchester United announced a deal to sign the Benfica defender in a reported £30m deal at the weekend.
Lindelof played a key role in Benfica’s title-winning season in the 2016-17 campaign to reignite talk of a potential move to Old Trafford this summer.
Manchester United were linked with a move to sign Lindelof when Jose Mourinho was appointed last summer but the Red Devils ended up signing Ivory Coast defender Eric Bailly from Villarreal.
The Portuguese coach had to cope with a defensive crisis during the 2016-17 campaign, with Bailly, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo all suffering setbacks during the season.
Speaking to 888sport about what Lindelof will need to do to be a success at Manchester United, the club’s former assistant manager Meulensteen said:
“To be one of the two Manchester United centre-backs you need to be solid and deal with any danger when it comes your way but on the other hand you also have to be comfortable on the ball, to play out from the back.
“I’m sure that Mourinho has done his homework on Lindelof and those are the qualities that he will need.”
Manchester United won the Europa League last term thanks to a 2-0 win against Dutch giants Ajax.
