Alvaro Morata has insisted that he isn’t sure how close he came to a move to Manchester United this summer after he joined Chelsea this week.

The Spanish forward was relentlessly linked with a move to Manchester United throughout the summer but the Red Devils ended up signing Romelu Lukaku from Everton after failing to agree a fee with Real Madrid for Morata.

That prompted Chelsea to make a move and the Blues confirmed that they had agreed a fee to land the 24-year-old with the Spanish club on Wednesday evening.

Morata will have heard about the speculation linking him with a move to Manchester Untied this summer, but the player insists that he does not know how close the Red Devils came to signing him.

Asked how close he was to signing for Manchester United this summer, Morata told Sky Sports News at Heathrow Airport on Thursday morning: “I don’t know.

“The most important thing is that I’m here and I’m going to play for Chelsea. I will have a medical and I think everything is OK.

“The Premier League is one of the best in the world and I’m so happy to be here.”

Morata is set to become Chelsea’s fourth signing of the summer after the Blues wrapped up deals to bring in Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger and Tiemoue Bakayoko.
