Alan Smith has told Arsene Wenger to cash in on Alexis Sanchez and let the Chilean leave Arsenal this summer.

The Chile international’s situation has been a relentless source of speculation this summer after he entered into the final 12 months of his contract at The Emirates.

Sanchez does not yet appear to be ready to put pen to paper on a new contract with Arsenal – and Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have been touted as possible destinations for the 28-year-old.

Wenger said on Saturday that Sanchez is definitely staying at the club but the uncertainty surrounding his future continues.

And former Arsenal star Smith believes that the time is right for the Gunners to cash in on Sanchez in what has become a familiar tale at The Emirates in recent years.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Smith said: “Alexis Sanchez is a big shadow hanging over the Emirates.

“Arsene Wenger says he is determined not to sell him, but he seems determined to leave.

“If you’ve got an unhappy player, a bit like Coutinho at Liverpool, that’s not a great situation to have in the dressing room.

“For me, it’s a no-brainer: you’ve got to let him go, get the money and move on.

“What the owners would think about keeping a player you could get £60m for and then letting him go for nothing in 12 months’ time, I don’t know.

“It happens time and time again at Arsenal.”

Wenger confirmed over the weekend that Sanchez is due to return to Arsenal on Tuesday after he was struck down with flu towards the end of his summer holiday.

Sanchez helped Arsenal win the FA Cup last season thanks to a 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Wembley in May.
