Insider explains why Arsenal could sell key 28-year-old star if the price is right
South American football expert Tim Vickery explains why Arsenal could be tempted to cash in on Alexis Sanchez
Arsene Wenger could be tempted to sell Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez, according to Tim Vickery.
The Gunners forward’s future has been a source of relentless debate since the early stages of the 2016-17 Premier League campaign.
The Sanchez transfer saga has rumbled on into the summer transfer window with no sign of a conclusion despite the new season starting in two weeks.
The 28-year-old has less than 12 months remaining on his current contract with the north London club but has failed to agree a contract extension – so far.
Sanchez has been linked with a potential move to Premier League champions Chelsea and title rivals Manchester City in the current transfer window.
South American football expert Vickery explained why Wenger could be tempted to sell the Chile international if a suitor is willing to meet the north London club’s valuation.
“He’s 28 now Sanchez, if I were Arsene Wenger there’s something that would be going round and round in my head,” Vickery told talkSPORT.
“[The] 2014 World Cup, [the] 2015 Copa America – all the way to the final, [the] 2017 Confederations Cup, 2018 – assuming they [Chile] qualify – another World Cup, 2019 another Copa America.
“Sanchez is a player who plays with that intensity and he’s at that age – when he was in his pomp – Wenger would let the player go, maybe a year before you thought the player had reached his peak.
“For that reason, it wouldn’t surprise me at the moment when the price is right, they let go of him.”
Sanchez scored 24 times in 37 games in the Premier League last season to finish as Arsenal’s top goal-scorer.
The South American moved to Arsenal in a £35m deal from La Liga giants Barcelona in the 2014 summer transfer window.
Sanchez has only won two FA Cup crowns during his three-season stay at the Emirates Stadium.
