Arsenal told to forget about signing 26-year-old attacker
Steve Nicol doesn't expect Riyad Mahrez to leave Leicester City this summer despite reported interest from Arsenal
Riyad Mahrez won’t be leaving Leicester City in the summer transfer window despite being linked to Arsenal earlier this summer, Steve Nicol has claimed.
The Algeria international struggled to make an impression in his second full season in the Premier League after a disappointing return of six goals and three assists in 36 appearances in the English top flight last term.
Mahrez was a key member of the Leicester team that won the Premier League title in 2015-16 season after the attacking midfielder netted 17 times and 11 assists to win the PFA player of the year award.
The African midfielder opted to commit his future to Leicester last summer despite being linked with a move to Arsenal and La Liga giants Barcelona.
Mahrez has been mentioned as a potential alternative for Arsenal if Arsene Wenger is unable to secure a deal to sign France international Thomas Lemar.
Former Liverpool defender Nicol believes Mahrez will remain at Leicester beyond the summer transfer window.
“He is a great player. He is a talented player. He is going nowhere,” Nicol told ESPN FC on Friday afternoon.
“He will stay at Leicester. There is always talk and there are always rumours.”
Arsenal signed Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac in a free transfer from Bundesliga giants Schalke 04.
The Gunners spent a club-record £52m fee on Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette earlier this month.
