Ex-striker says new Chelsea signing is an upgrade on 28-year-old striker
Arsenal legend Stewart Robson believes Alvaro Morata is a big upgrade on current Chelsea striker Diego Costa
Alvaro Morata is an upgrade on Chelsea striker Diego Costa, according to Stewart Robson.
The Premier League champions started the summer being linked with a move to re-sign Everton striker Romelu Lukaku to lead their attack next season.
However, Manchester United managed to spring a surprise and beat the Premier League champions to the £75m addition of the Belgium international.
Chelsea were forced to rethink their plans after Antonio Conte informed Costa that he is free to leave the west London club this summer.
The English champions landed Morata in a £58m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid before handing the 24-year-old the number nine shirt.
Former Arsenal striker Robson declared that Morata is a superior striker to Costa despite the latter’s experience in the Premier League.
“I think Morata is an excellent player,” Robson told ESPN FC on Wednesday.
“Costa was really poor after Christmas until the last few games of the season. I don’t think Conte was happy.
“I think Morata was an upgrade.”
Costa has played a key role in Chelsea’s two Premier League titles in the past three seasons after scoring 46 goals in the two title-winning seasons.
Chelsea signed the controversial Spain international in a £32m deal from La Liga side Atletico Madrid in the 2014 summer transfer window.
