David Luiz plays down Chelsea's chances of winning the Champions League next season
David Luiz has played down Chelsea’s chances of winning the Champions League next season.
The west London club are preparing for a return to Europe’s elite club competition after Antonio Conte led the Blues to the Premier League title in his first campaign in charge at the club.
The Blues missed out on a place in the competition last season after their disastrous 10th-placed finish in the 2015-16 season.
Chelsea won the Premier League under Roberto Di Matteo back in 2012 but Luiz has warned his team-mates that lifting the trophy is an incredibly tall order.
Luiz is quoted as saying by Metro: “It’s never easy. The Champions League is a freak competition.
“You need to arrive in the right moment with the best players not injured, not suspended, in the best level.
“So sometimes you do amazing in the group stage and then after you don’t have the best players or they’re not in the best moment physically.
“It’s a top-level competition, so this makes a difference. Let’s see. I hope we can arrive in the right moment at the right level.”
Chelsea are gearing up for a return to the Champions League after their sparkling debut campaign under Conte last term.
The west London side won the Premier League at a canter but ended up missing out on a domestic double when they were beaten 2-1 by Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley back in May.
Chelsea have signed four players so far this summer – Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Alvaro Morata.
