Romelu Lukaku will pose more of a threat in front of goal for Manchester United next season than Alvaro Morata at Chelsea, according to Danny Murphy.

The Blues confirmed on Wednesday that they had agreed a deal to sign Morata from Real Madrid after months of speculation about the striker’s future.

Manchester United were heavily linked with a bid to sign Morata throughout the summer but the Red Devils ended up landing striker Romelu Lukaku from Everton.

Lukaku has proven Premier League pedigree, while Morata is gearing up for his first taste of English football next season.

And former midfielder Murphy feels that opposition defences will be more worried about coming up against Lukaku than Morata next term.

“I think centre-halves generally rather play against Morata than Lukaku because he’s more manageable in terms of his physicality,” former midfielder Murphy said on talkSPORT.

“He (Morata) is not the quickest, he’s got great movement and he’s a good finisher. He’s quite reliable in his build-up where people doubt Lukaku’s reliability.

“But in terms of a match-winner, someone who can bully you, run in behind, hold the ball up, climb over you and head it, Lukaku on his day is hard to stop.”

Manchester United and Chelsea are both gearing up for returns to the Champions League next season after missing out last term.

Morata will be hoping to help Chelsea retain their Premier League title next term after they won the trophy in Antonio Conte’s first campaign in charge at the club.
