Cesc Fabregas sends message to Chelsea fans about Tiemoue Bakayoko signing
The Chelsea star is relishing the battle for a first-team spot with Tiemoue Bakayoko next term
Cesc Fabregas has welcomed increased competition for a Chelsea spot after the arrival of Tiemoue Bakayoko this summer.
The Premier League champions finally completed a deal to sign the France international in a £39m deal from Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco earlier this month.
Bakayoko was the second of Chelsea’s four summer signings so far as Antonio Conte bolstered his midfield options ahead of the 2017-18 campaign.
Fabregas struggled to break into the Chelsea team under Conte following the Italian’s appointment before the 30-year-old finally broke into the team in the second half of the campaign.
The former Arsenal captain still managed to score five goals and to make 12 assists despite starting 13 games and making 16 appearances from the bench.
And Fabregas is relishing the battle with N’Golo Kante, Bakayoko and Nemanja Matic for a spot in Conte’s midfield next term.
“I think the manager has said himself that it’s a long season ahead with lots of games and we will need all of the players to be ready for when he needs us,” Fabregas told Chelsea’s website.
“I’ve been competing for 15 seasons. That will not put me down after what happened last season and how I stood up for it. I’m ready for anybody.
“I feel great, I understand the philosophy of the manager very well and I know what he wants from me. I know what I need to do to help the team.”
Fabregas moved to Chelsea in a £27m deal from La Liga giants Barcelona in the 2014 summer transfer window.
The Spain international won the Premier League title and the EFL Cup in his first season at west London club.
Fabregas won his second Premier League title under Conte last term.
