Insider claims Morata was Conte’s choice, not Chelsea’s
Guillem Balague says it was Antonio Conte who pushed Chelsea to close a deal for Alvaro Morata this summer
Guillem Balague has claimed that it was Antonio Conte who pushed Chelsea to close a deal to sign Alvaro Morata this summer because the club favoured a move for Romelu Lukaku.
Chelsea confirmed on Wednesday evening that they had agreed a deal to sign Morata from Real Madrid and that the transfer is now subject to personal terms and the striker passing a medical.
The Blues were heavily linked with a move for Lukaku throughout the summer but Manchester United ended up winning the race for his signature last week.
Chelsea were on the lookout for a new striker and turned their attentions towards Morata after having missed out on Lukaku.
And Spanish football expert Balague has now claimed that Morata was Conte’s first-choice ahead of Lukaku this summer.
Balague wrote on Twitter on Wednesday night: “Morata (fast, clever, v.good finisher) was Conte’s choice. Club wanted Lukaku but Conte was worried by his lack of work off the ball.”
The Blues are preparing for a return to the Champions League next season after their title triumph last term.
Chelsea have won the title twice in the past three seasons.
