Stan Collymore explains why new Chelsea signing is better than Romelu Lukaku
The former striker explains why he believes Chelsea have signed a better striker than Manchester United this summer
Stan Collymore has hailed Chelsea signing Alvaro Morata as a more consistent player than Manchester United’s summer addition Romelu Lukaku.
Chelsea were initially thought to have made signing Lukaku their top priority this summer as manager Antonio Conte looked to bring the 24-year-old back to Stamford Bridge.
Manchester United, on the other hand, were reported to have made Morata a number one target after it became clear a move to sign Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann wasn’t on the cards.
However, the Red Devils pulled off a surprise £75m swoop to bring Lukaku to Old Trafford earlier this month to usurp the Premier League champions.
In a twist of fate, Chelsea completed a £58m deal to bring in Morata from La Liga giants Real Madrid after Conte missed out on the chance to work with Morata at his former club Juventus.
Writing in his Daily Mirror column, former Liverpool and Nottingham Forest star Collymore hailed Morata as a more consistent player than Lukaku.
“Chelsea ‘s capture of Alvaro Morata means they have just – but only just – won the battle with Manchester United in signing a big-name striker.
“The Spaniard is a good all-rounder, a grafter who will run into channels and make a nuisance of himself, and that kind of all-action style will go down a treat in the Premier League.
“He’s a big lad, at 6ft 2in, and quite wiry, rather than a big bruiser like Romelu Lukaku .
“But, more importantly, he’s a consistent 7/10 or 8/10 player, whereas Lukaku can be 10/10 in one game, but 5/10 in the next.
Chelsea won the Premier League title in their first season under Conte.
Jose Mourinho led Manchester United to a sixth-place finish but won the EFL Cup and the Europa League.
