Pundit: New Chelsea signing perfect for Antonio Conte
Former Arsenal striker Stewart Robson backs Alvaro Morata to be a success at Chelsea
Alvaro Morata is the perfect signing for Chelsea, according to Stewart Robson.
The striker’s future has been the source of endless speculation in the summer transfer window so far but the 24-year-old finally left Champions League holders Real Madrid after being linked with a host of clubs.
Manchester United were thought to be closing in on a deal to sign Morata after the Red Devils made the Spain international their top target following the Antoine Griezmann saga.
However, Jose Mourinho pulled off a transfer coup earlier this month after the Europa League winners managed to beat Premier League champions Chelsea to the signing of Everton star Romelu Lukaku.
Antonio Conte was forced to rethink his transfer plans and the Chelsea boss finally strengthened his attacking options on Wednesday after Morata was signed as an alternative to Lukaku.
Speaking to ESPN FC about the big money deal that sees the 24-year-old become Chelsea’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window, former Arsenal striker Robson backed Morata to be a success at Stamford Bridge.
“Morata is a fantastic signing. He is the icing on the cake for Antonio Conte,” Robson said.
“He has a new contract and he will be happy with Morata because things haven’t gone his way this summer.”
Chelsea won the Premier League title in their first season under Conte’s management.
Diego Costa scored 20 times in their title-winning campaign but the Italian coach has told the controversial striker he is surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.
